PRAXIS II Latin Exam

This exam is designed for individuals who like to become Latin instructors in grades K-12. You will be given two hours to complete as 120 multiple-choice exam. There will be 12 questions regarding pedagogy and professional matters; 12 questions regarding English word study, derivatives and cognates; 18 questions regarding Roman civilization, 48 questions regarding reading comprehension, translation and literary skills; and 30 questions regarding grammar.

Pedagogy and Professional Matters
This section of the exam will cover professional organizations and resources, curriculums and written materials, language analysis, pedagogical approaches and pronunciation of Latin.

English Word Study, Derivatives and Cognates
This section of the exam will cover derivatives of English words that are based in Latin and; the suffixes, prefixes, and roots of English words that are based and Latin.

Roman Civilization
This section of the exam will cover Roman mythology, culture, history, law, government, art, religion, archaeology, architecture, philosophy, education, and public and private life.

Reading Comprehension, Translation and Literary Skills
This section of the exam is based on four to six passages of 40 to 100 words in classical and later Latin. These passages are not edited. After each reading segment will you be asked to answer questions regarding contents, the translation of lines and phrases, grammatical form and function of phrases or words, and to complete a literary analysis of the segment. Questions in this portion of the exam will be written in English. You will then be asked to translate lines are phrases from a literary text. Your knowledge of Roman civilization, pedagogical approaches and word study may be included in this section of the exam. Two of the reading sections are poetry, and one section will be by Ovid, Catullus or Vergil Horace. The prose reading selections will include a passage from Nepos, Sallust, Caesar, Pliny, Livy or Cicero.

Grammar
This section of the exam will assess your ability to find and replace all or part of a sentence with text that is closer to its original meaning, identify and corrects word function and grammatical errors, and the ability to make morphological changes to a Latin word by conjugating the form.
