Praxis II Speech Language Pathology Exam

This test is designed for individuals with a master's degree, who would like to become speech pathologists. This is the national examination for speech and language pathology and, is one of numerous requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence, that is issued by the American Speech Language Hearing Association. You will be given two hours to complete this 120 multiple-choice question exam. There will be 10 questions regarding psychometrics, research and professional issues, 23 questions regarding clinical management, six questions regarding hearing and audiology, 23 questions regarding neurogenic disorders, 15 questions regarding speech disorders, 23 questions regarding language and phonological disorders, and 20 questions regarding the basic human communication process.

Psychometrics, Research and Professional Issues
This section of the exam will cover laws and standards, psychometrics, research methodology, and ethical practices. The questions regarding standards and laws will cover reporting requirements of government agencies, federal regulations and laws regarding delivery of services. Questions regarding professional standards, government regulations, and the design of appropriate assessments and treatment plans will be included in this section of the exam. Questions regarding psychometrics and research methodology will cover test principles and construction, research design models, reliability of assessment procedures, and criteria for selection of testing materials. The questions regarding ethical practices will cover client privacy, legal and professional issues regarding staff, maintaining client records, making referrals, and understanding all aspects of professional conduct.

Clinical Management
This section of the exam will cover genetics, speech and language intervention, speech and language assessments, instrumentation, efficacy, documentation of client progress, counseling, and augmentative/alternative communication. Questions regarding genetics will cover genetic principles, and the impact of developmental and genetic conditions on hearing, language development, speech production, and language processing. The speech language intervention questions will cover remediation strategies for disorders, diagnostic intervention, and selection of activities, appropriate for the disorder and the age of the client. Questions regarding, speech and language assessments will cover administration of standardized testing, standardizing valuation procedures, screening procedures for clients of all ages, interpersonal skills, interviewing techniques, and, identification of individuals at risk for communication disorders. Questions regarding client status will cover service delivery models, types of treatment, and formal recommendations. The questions regarding instrumentation will cover the purpose and application of technology for assessment and treatment of speech and language disorders, and instrumentation used for speech and language analysis. Questions regarding efficacy will cover clinical services regarding hearing, language, and speech. Communicating assessment results and treatment plans will also be covered in the efficacy section of the exam. Documentation questions will cover referral procedures and follow-up, professional written documentation, collection and utilization of information from other agencies, communicating client history to other agencies, and termination of services based on client progress. Questions regarding counseling will cover counseling techniques and, interpersonal communication. Your ability to communicate assessment results, treatment plans, and progress to clients and other professionals will be assessed in this section of the exam. The augmentative/alternative communication questions will cover determination of candidacy for augmentative/alternative communication devices and, assessment the of various augmentative/alternative communication devices.

Hearing and Audiology
This section of the exam will cover auditory rehabilitation, auditory assessment, and hearing science. The auditory rehabilitation questions will cover management of hearing loss and speech language intervention. Questions regarding auditory assessment will cover referrals to appropriate professionals, interpretation of tympanograms and audiograms. Your knowledge of hearing screening methodologies for all ages will be assessed in this section of the exam. The hearing science questions will cover acquired and congenital hearing loss in adults and children, the anatomy and physiology of hearing, and the principles of hearing.

Neurogenic Disorders
This section of the exam will cover dysphasia and neurological disorders. The dysphasia questions will cover assessment and treatment of swallowing disorders, causes and effects of swallowing disorders, and the process of swallowing. The neurological questions will cover cognitive communication disorders, aphasia, motor speech disorders, and traumatic brain injury.

Speech Disorders
Questions regarding speech disorders will cover voice disorders, resonance disorders, and fluency disorders. The voice disorders questions will cover prevention, treatment, and assessment of voice disorders and, laryngeal speech. The behavioral, traumatic, neuralgia, laryngeal, and respiratory issues that impact phonation will be included in this section of the exam. The resonance disorders, questions will cover prevention, treatment, and assessment of resonance disorders. Additional resonance disorders questions will cover the impact of behavioral, traumatic, and disease, neurological, and congenital anomalies, on resonance. The fluency disorders questions will cover prevention, treatment, and assessment of fluency disorders, along with neurological and psychological impacts on fluency of speech.

Language and Phonological Disorders
This section of the exam will cover language and phonological disorders. The language disorder questions will cover treatment of language disorders and delays, expressive and receptive language disorders, normal delayed and disordered language development, and linguistic, motor and developmental language processes. Questions regarding phonological disorders will cover the phonological process, and oral motor, dental, learning, and behavioral influences on articulation.

The Basic Human Communication Process
This section of the exam will cover speech science, multicultural awareness, language science, learning theory, and language acquisition. Questions regarding speech signs will cover the anatomy and physiology required for the production, reception, and processing of hearing, language and speech, acoustic phonetics, speech perception, physiological phonetics, and the neural bases of hearing and speech. The questions regarding multicultural awareness will cover cultural differences of nonverbal communication, dialect/language interference and speech/language disorders, and dialectal disorders. Your knowledge of communicative differences, socioeconomic and cultural impacts on language, and linguistic differences of various cultures will be assessed in this section of the exam. Questions regarding learning theory will cover cognitive development, behavioral models, treatment of language disorders, and the relationship between learning and language. Language science questions will cover phonological theory and normal developments, categories of grammar, syntax, pragmatics, semantics, morphology, language processing and production, phonological and phonetic sounds of speech, and the structure of language. The questions regarding language acquisition will cover linguistic, motor, and developmental processes, behavior management and modification, the relationship between language learning and cognition. Additional questions will cover normal development of pragmatics, semantics, syntax, and phonology along with the normal course of speech and language development.
